Liberatv - Bee-Blip™, From the Operating Table to the World Championship: Surgeon Thomas Giesen’s Invention

Developed in Lugano in response to a common problem in the operating room, the device measures the depth of a hole in the bone in real time. It won the Gold Medal at the 46th SICOT Orthopedic Congress in Kyoto.

Sometimes an innovation stems from revolutionary technology. Other times, it stems from a much simpler question: isn’t there a better way to do this?

That’s what Dr. Thomas Giesen—an FMH-certified specialist in hand surgery, orthopedic surgery, and traumatology, who works primarily at the Ars Medica Clinic in Gravesano—asked himself about two and a half years ago while operating on a complex fracture alongside an assistant.

The problem seemed trivial: how could he accurately determine the depth of the hole just drilled into the bone in order to select a screw of the correct length?

That question led to the creation of Bee-Blip™, a patented electronic system designed to provide measurements directly during drilling, eliminating the need for the subsequent step of using a traditional manual depth gauge.
