Settimanale Azione - Preventing Falls, Protecting Independence

Falls among older adults can have serious consequences and jeopardize their quality of life and physical and mental well-being

Falls are one of the leading health issues among the elderly, with consequences that can compromise independence, quality of life, and physical and mental well-being. We therefore aim to explore the most common causes, risk factors, and prevention strategies, while also highlighting the importance of an active lifestyle, home safety, and the role of family members and caregivers. The goal is to provide practical information and useful tips to reduce the risk of falls and promote safer, healthier aging.

What Luigi (a name known to the editorial staff), an 82-year-old retiree who tripped over the hallway rug while heading to the kitchen, told us can happen to anyone: “At first, I thought it was just an accident. Fortunately, I didn’t break anything, but since that day I’ve been afraid to move around the house on my own.” In the months that followed, Luigi increasingly limited his outings and even his daily activities, until, on his doctor’s advice, he began a rehabilitation program, adjusted his medication, and made a few simple modifications to his home. Today, he’s walking with greater confidence again, and his experience shows that a fall is almost never something to be taken lightly—and how important it is to act promptly to prevent fear from compromising one’s independence and quality of life.
