La Regione - The Vaccine That Can Take on Cancer

Every year in Switzerland, cancer kills about 17,000 people. Every year, 48,000 new diagnoses are made. But behind these numbers lies an even broader reality: every patient is part of a network of family members, friends, and caregivers who share the burden of the disease. This means that, directly or indirectly, hundreds of thousands of people live with cancer every day. Yet, while diagnoses are on the rise—driven by an aging population and improved early detection—cancer research is undergoing one of the most revolutionary phases in its history. Today, people survive much longer than they did twenty years ago: in Switzerland, there are approximately 450,000 “cancer survivors”—people who have been diagnosed with cancer and continue to live, often for many years. This achievement, however, brings new challenges: Who will pay for increasingly expensive treatments? How can work be balanced with a chronic illness? Is there really such a thing as the “right to be forgotten” when it comes to cancer? And above all: Will access to the most innovative treatments be guaranteed for everyone?
